Why I Don't Read Books Very Often During the School Year

A couple Sundays ago, I decided to read The Hobbit. I convinced myself that I would read it when my homework was finished, or even for a few minutes before I went to bed.

And I did just that. For a few hours. Then I started reading it more.

Then I started reading it a lot. Then I looked at the clock and realized that it was 11pm and I still had homework to do. I quickly set the book down, finished my homework, and got into my bed. Then I picked up the book again.

When I woke up the next day, I was ridiculously tired, so I quickly drank a latte before heading to school.

Then I got home and practically collapsed... and picked up the book. This process repeated itself, only I would read for longer periods at a time. On Tuesday, I began reading in large two hour chunks. I would often have homework left to do when it got late, so I would wake up extremely early in the morning to finish it. It was a vicious cycle.

I finished the book on Wednesday.

  1. Being captivated by a great book is, indeed, "sweet torture". (no pun intended...though it wouldn't be a bad one)
